March 15, 2011 -

Dear HJJCC Members,

For the past 12 years the American Diabetes Association has put on the Step Out to Fight Diabetes Walk here in Hawaii.  This annual fundraiser not only encourages participants to lead healthy and active lifestyle by exercising, but also creates awareness within the community about the seriousness of this disease.  As reported in the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 25.8 million children and adults in the United States—8.3% of the population—have diabetes.  In 2007, diabetes was listed as the underlying cause on 71,382 death certificates and was also listed as a contributing factor on an additional 160,022 death certificates.

With 8.3% of the population having been diagnosed with diabetes, this disease affects many of us.  You too may know someone who struggles with this disease.  Support them by helping to support the American Diabetes Association at the Step Out to Fight Diabetes Walk.
