The Community Development Committee is looking for volunteers for the Sony Open Pro-Am Awards Celebration. We will be helping with setup, greeting guests, passing out Pro-Am awards and other duties throughout the evening. Specific volunteer duties will be determined as the event date approaches.

Attire: Dresses for women, Evening Aloha Attire for men

Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii’s New Year’s ‘Ohana Festival 2012

HJJCC invites its members, their friends and families to participate in the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii’s New Year’s ‘Ohana Festival 2012. For the second year in a row, the HJJCC will have their own food booth at the festival to help fundraise for upcoming HJJCC events. Volunteers will help make and sell Kauai-style toasted ‘Flying Saucers’ – a yummy sloppy joe and cheese stuffed between two pieces of toasted bread. Mmm… bet your mouth is already watering and stomach growling!

Several volunteers are needed for three (3) shifts on Sunday, January 8, 2012. The HJJCC Cherry Blossom Court will be there to assist with sales and TV news crews will be on site to promote this fun and active family/community-inspired event. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Date: Sunday, January 8, 2012
Shift 1: 6:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. (4 volunteers for set-up)
Shift 2: 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. (13 volunteers)
Shift 3*: 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.* (13 volunteers, includes clean up)
Location: Food booths will be setup on Mo’ili’ili Field
Parking: Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii parking lot, available street parking around the area and select University of Hawaii parking areas.
Attire: HJJCC t-shirt (If you do not have one and are currently a member, please include your t-shirt size with your RSVP. For non-members please wear comfortable clothing that you are not afraid to get dirty.)

Honolulu Marathon Volunteer Event

The Honolulu Marathon committee has asked for volunteers to help with the Honolulu Marathon Start Line. We will be assisting with various tasks, including (but not limited to):

- Staging the runners (holding ropes and banners and answering questions)
- Park security (which involves marshaling runners into the Ala Moana staging area)
- Assisting with the buses and traffic flow along the Beach Road or Atkinson / Ala Moana intersection.

Meeting time: Please report by approximately 1 a.m.

Kent Walther: Kent Mori Walther is an Associate at BlackSand Capital, LLC, a Hawaii-based real estate investment firm founded in 2010 by principals from Kobayashi Group and The MacNaughton Group, two of Hawaii’s premier real estate development and investment companies.  He is a member of the firm’s acquisitions and asset management team and is responsible for investment underwriting, economic and demographic analysis, and general financial modeling for BlackSand. Kent holds an MBA degree focused on finance and real estate from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Harvard University.

Catherine Toth: Born and raised on Oahu, Catherine E. Toth has been chronicling her adventures in her blog, The Daily Dish (www.thecatdish.com), for six years. She worked as a newspaper reporter in Hawaii for 10 years and continues to freelance — in between teaching journalism full time at Kapiolani Community College, hitting the surf and eating everything in sight — for national and local print and online publications.

Toby Tamaye: Toby is President of AT Marketing, a Hawaii-based firm experienced in advertising, public relations, event marketing, and social-media marketing for Hawaii residents and its tourism markets. Toby also develops a variety of events from evening business mixers to major street block parties. He is a 2009 class member of Pacific Business News Forty Under 40 business professionals.  Toby is a sophisticated user of social networking and is ranked in the top 25 in the World as the most influencial PR and travel consultants on Twitter.

Kalihi Christmas Parade

The Kalihi Business Administration has asked for our participation in their annual Kalihi Christmas Parade.

We will be assisting the 59th Cherry Blossom Court in decorating the vehicle in which they will be riding and asking for volunteers to hold our banner and walk alongside the court. Please feel free to invite your family and friends as well!

Halloween is just around the corner and we know you’ve been waiting all year to show off your costumes! Join us again this year as we volunteer for the Waialae Complex Halloween Costume Contest at Kahala Mall. Families and children of all ages will be dressing up in their cutest, most creative, and scary costumes. Unfortunately, we aren’t allowed to compete, but it will still be a fun community service event!

We will be meeting at Kahala Mall’s Center Stage at 2:10 p.m. The contest starts at 3:00 p.m. and ends around 4:30 p.m. Volunteers will be escorting contestants to and from the stage while holding signs to indicate the age group/category for the judges. Contestants will then receive goody bags for their participation.
